The Next Apple

This has been sitting in Draft form for a long time so I better get it out before Steve Jobs announces the new Apple product(s) tomorrow.

Like everyone else I expect an Apple tablet computer to be unveiled. And this Apple media tablet will in some ways be the Newton reborn yet so much more. I envision a device that takes what was learned from the Newton PDA and the iPhone/iPod development.

This device will also be designed to treat print as the iPod treated music. That is, I believe Apple is designing a device that will truly provide all of the information of the world in your lap. It will be a portable library. It will target information junkies like Mr. Jobs himself. As is well known, after dropping out of Reed College Steve Jobs would drop in on classes he was not registered for simply to learn new things.

This device may even include a new application to replace the aging iTunes. Call it Alexandria or something to indicate the intention of the new device and software. Because the iPod took over the music and video world, but the print world was still missing from a portable device and this is what I think Steve Jobs is targeting. So there may be a new application that will be used to organize the information of the world.

The best way to describe this product is with the scenario I see it in - I wake up in the morning and read morning my morning newspaper subscriptions on my Apple tablet, head to the first class of the day and load up my textbook, during class take notes on the device using handwriting recognition, take a mid-day break to read some of my favorite book, after dinner my friends and I play games on it, then video chat with my family later in the evening, as a night cap invite my girlfriend over and download a newly released movie.

I hope it is part of the iPhone, iPod Touch ecosystem though I would not be surprised if there were two versions. One running standard OS X. One running the iPhone OS. What would be surprising is:
-if it blew everyone away by running a version of the Intel Core i5 CPU
-had two cameras

What seems clear is that it will have persistent wireless connectivity. If this is the case it will do to magazines and books and games what the iPod did to music and what broadband is doing to traditional television. In other words, with a persistent wireless data connection AT&T or Verizon will only be involved in moving packets as people use their iPhone or Apple tablet with Skype, Google Voice, etc, and not the traditional voice plan. This is the Trojan horse the wireless companies may not see coming.

In addition to an Apple tablet I would love to see other new products and services announced.

Apple TV
- give it one simple change, make it dual bootable. iPhone OS or OS X. Let people play with it.

iPhone 4.0
- my wishlist: dual movie cameras, IR sensor, LED flash, wireless syncing, run the iPhone OS virtually on the desktop, OLED screen, embedded solar panel to charge the permanent battery that is there for emergency power and swapping out a removable battery

iDisk
- 2 Tb storage limit. My mac.com account recently had a billing issue and during that time I could login to me.com and my idisk, however, all of my personal files were replaced with a new structure and the space available was listed as "2 Tb". Once the billing issue was resolved my space was back at 2 Gb and my files restored but it seemed like a big clue.

One more thing... I almost expect the tablet to be the last major product Steve Jobs launches as it is the culmination of his life's work. The next step for him may be retirement.
