Cable is busy battling telephone companies for land lines (the telcos are barely trying to hold onto these Luddite customers) to inflate subscriber numbers and holding out for switched video and DOCSIS 3.0. But even with DOCSIS 3.0 cable will only be able to offer to one neighborhood node what Verizon's FIOS will offer an individual subscriber. And satellite television is on its way to 100 HD channels.
